English local elections show significant Conservative gains, but ...

... with only 133 out of 312 councils having declared it is theoretically possible (although unlikely) that this might change when the full results are known, unless there are unexpectedly major regional variations in voting trends.

Movements so far: Conservative +318, Labour -163, LibDems -97, Others -59.

The Conservatives have 41 per cent of the votes so far (Labour 27 per cent) and if translated into a similar result at a future General Election would mean that the Conservatives could win it, according to them - although it is always dangerous to extrapolate from local to national elections.
