Blair postpones dissolution of Parliament

BBC News24 have just announced that Downing Street have indicated that the Prime Minister will not visit Her Majesty the Queen tomorrow to seek a dissolution of Parliament, as had been expected, because of the death of the Pope,.

Although it will still be feasible for the election to be held on 5th May, because the deadline for dissolving Parliament for this to happen is Monday 11th April, but it does suggest that the long-expected timetable may be slipping, although as local elections are scheduled in much of England and Wales for 5th May (but not for Scotland), I remain of the view that unless it is planned to delay the general election significantly, perhaps until the Autumn, then the most likely date remains 5th May. No doubt all of this will become clearer during the course of the coming week.
